+INFORMATION

The EFNS Scientific Panel Neurotraumatology worked very successfully during the last year as its chair, Professor Klaus R.H. von Wild reported on occasion of the EFNS Scientific Panel Chairpersons business meeting in Paris on Monday, September 6th, 2004.
Guidelines ready for publication
in the EFNS Handbook of Neurology 2005

The Task Force on Management of Apallic Syndrome/Vegetative State
(VS), which is now chaired by Klaus R.H. von Wild (Münster, Germany), and Erika Ortega Suhrkamp (Oldenburg, Germany) together with Franz Gerstenbrand (Innsbruck, Austria) is finalizing their Guidelines so that they will be ready for publication and included in the EFNS Handbook of Neurology 2005. P.E. Vos, M.D. Ph.D, Professor for Neurology and Consultant of the Department of Neurology, UMCN St. Radboud (Nijmegen,The Netherlands), chair of the Task force on Management of Mild Traumatic Brain Injury (MTBI), and the members will review the already published Guidelines in respect to practicability and necessity of early CT inverstigations so that the revised Guidelines will also be published in the EFNS Handbook.
Two new Task Forces
Two new Task Forces were suggested by the chair and finally established at the Panel Neurotraumatology Delegate's Meeting on September 7th.
a) Task Force for Management of Whiplash Injury , Chair: Dusan Butinar (Ljubliana, Slovenia). He will be the co-chairman at The Panel's workshop on that important topic which is jointly organised by EFNS and EMN in Athens on September 20, 2005.
b) Task Force for Management of Severest Traumatic Brain Injury, Chair: Pieter Vos (Nijmegen, The Netherlands).
It has been decided that both Task Forces will report their drafts on the
new EFNS Management Guidelines to the Panel at the business meeting in
Athens September 2005.
Third Focused Workshop on Quality of Life after severe traumatic brain lesions
The Third Focused Workshop on Quality of Life after severe traumatic brain lesions, again jointly organised by EFNS and EMN and chaired by Klaus R.H. von Wild (Münster, Germany), Jean-Luc Truelle (Paris, France) and Franz Gerstenbrand (Innsbruck, Austria), informed about medical facts and outcome in severest TBI patients and the assessment of Health Related Quality of Life (HRQOL) after TBI. Rita Formisano, Neurologist and Rehabilitation Physician (Rome, Italy) draw the attention on early prognostic neuropsychological and clinical signs, when first oral feeding has the highst validity in her asessment scale of hunderts of patients in vegetative state/apallic syndrome following TBI.
Jean Luc Truelle presented the content and practicability of QOLIBRI, a questionnaire developed by an interdisciplinary working group of neuro scientists from 15 nations, with a first overview of the domains, which are asked to the patients. First results will be available to the EFNS or EMN congresses 2005. Franz Gerstenbrand had referred in his introduction to the absolute necessity of a maximal initial maximum therapy and to the legal bases; he expressed himself being against an active euthanasia in cases of hopeless patientes with severe brain lesions (Apallic Syndrom/VS) without signs of mental and physical recovery after one year, but he considered the humane recommendation of a passive euthanasia considered on the condition of an informed consent.
Professor Reuven Feuerstein , Founder and Chairman International Centre for the Enhancement of Learning potential (ICELP) Hadassah WIZO, Canada Research Institute (HWCRI) Deitcher Center Besner Foundation, Bar Ilan University (Jerusalem, Israel), was one of the most attentive listeners of the workshops on HRQOL. He was very impressed by the QOLIBRI instrumentarium and he will cooperate actively in the group, to which he was invited. Feuerstein has also accepted the invitation expressed by Klaus R.H. von Wild to attend the second AMN Congres in Phoenix.

Date, site and theme for AMN Meetings
from 2006 to 2008

As George P. Prigatano, President of the World AMN, has defined, the site of any AMN meeting will be dependent on the scientific value and theme that that meeting will foster and he has already established that tone for the Phoenix meeting, November 2004 . The focus of this 2nd AMN Congress is clearly on neurosurgical and neuropsychological collaboration in the treatment of TBI patients. Future meetings will also have a theme and draw on areas of expertise in the locale in which the meeting will be held. Each meeting will also provide for poster sessions and encourage dialogue between senior and junior colleagues, as well as across disciplines. "To be a success, all of us must work diligently to establish high standards for our meetings, and to ensure that research information is integrated with meaningful clinical interventions", said Prigatano.

After the Third AMN Congress and Members' Meeting in Japan, March 10 , 2005 , the Academy for Multidisciplinary Neurotraumatology will organize the following congresses from 2006 to 2008.

The 2006 meeting will be held in Copenhagen. The focus will be on holistic approaches to neuropsychological rehabilitation for which the Center for Brain Injury Rehabilitation at the University of Copenhagen are, of course, internationally recognized. Anne-Lise Christensen will organize that meeting.

The 2007 meeting will focus on the use of functional neuroimaging techniques to understand motor recovery and how this information can be transferred to understanding other forms of recovery following traumatic brain injury. This meeting will be held in Dusseldorf/Germany, organized by Volker Hömberg and Klaus R. H. von Wild

The 2008 meeting will focus on issues concerning recovery and rehabilitation of children after TBI. This will be hosted by Lucia Braga and colleagues in Brasilia/Brazil.

Immediate and tangible benefit of the membership fee

The AMN membership fee has been established at 100 Euros per year. Membership fees are due March 1st of each year, beginning with March of 2005. Members who do not pay within 30 days of that date will be charged an additional 25 Euros. If membership fee is not paid 2 consecutive years, the member will be contacted to see if they wish to maintain their membership in the organization. Failure to pay membership fees for 2 years would result in termination of membership.

The membership fee can be applied to registration fees at the national meeting. For example, once an individual has paid their membership fee for the year 2005, they can attend the Nagoya meeting at 100 Euros less than registration costs. This will be the most immediate and tangible benefit of the membership fee.

All applications for membership should be sent to Professor Klaus von Wild *), as the ad hoc Membership Chairperson. He will then present them to the Executive Committee and Presidium at the annual meeting, to be voted on.
